City Council Approves Study for Downtown Sports Arena

By Stephen Roberts | November 6, 2009

The Baltimore-based Cordish Companies and the Las Vegas City Council got together to approve an agreement for the developer to study building a sports arena as well as an entertainment district and a hotel-casino in downtown Las Vegas.  The Cordish Company has built many projects across the country, including the Hard Rock Hotel-Casinos in Florida and other entertainment districts centered by a sports arena.

The main part of their project would be to build a 20,000-seat arena for a professional hockey or basketball team, surrounded by nightclubs and restaurants.  The current City Hall site would be redeveloped into a Hotel and the city’s headquarters will be moved to Main Street.  The area being evaluated for the sports arena includes the current City Hall and the 19.75 acres the city owns between Las Vegas Boulevard and Eight Street, from Stewart to U.S. Highway 95.

No NBA or NHL team has been identified as a likely candidate to fill the sports arena.  Mayor Oscar Goodman has been pushing for a professional sports team here in Las Vegas, and spoke about the potential project as if it were a done deal.  The City Council and Cordish Companies have set up a two-year period where they will determine if the project is feasible.
