Little Known Henderson Nevada Facts
By Stephen Roberts | January 6, 2009
Do you know how Henderson Nevada got its name? The answer is actually pretty simple. The city was first known as Basic Townsite until the early 1940′s when it was renamed for Senator Charles B. Henderson. Senator Henderson was bestowed this honor based on his influence in bringing Basic Magnesium Inc. to Southern Nevada while serving on the Committee on Industrial Expositions. Senator Henderson never actually came to Henderson. He lived most of his life in Northern Nevada and attended universities in both California and Michigan. He was a US Senator from 1918-1921.
Most Henderson residents are not aware that we have our own Museum. Our Museum is called The Clark County Heritage Museum. This is the definitive place to go if you are looking for history on the City of Henderson. Henderson was originally built to house the workers of the Basic Magnesium plant and then was supposed to go away. The Museum is located at 1820 S. Boulder Highway. It is open daily from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM. The cost is $1.50 for adults and $1.00 for children ages 3-15. For more information you can call 702-455-7955.
And finally, many citizens do not realize that many movies and TV shows have been filmed right here in Henderson. Several outdoor scenes for the Western TV series Gunsmoke were filmed in the now demolished theme park “Old Vegas”. Many of the storylines for the TV hit CSI Las Vegas are filmed right on the streets of our city. “Diamonds are Forever” the James Bond hit from 1971 was partially filmed in Henderson as well.
These are just a few of the many aspects of Henderson that make it a great place to live, work and play.
