Tourism Decline This Year
By Stephen Roberts | September 30, 2009
Southern Nevada has seen its shallowest year-over-year percentage decline in visitation in July, showing the effects that this economy has had on this city. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported 3.2 million visitors in July of 2009, a 1.3 percent decrease from a year ago. Convention attendance was also down a dramatic 5.5 percent and room rates were down 18.6 percent.
Visitation patterns do show healthy weekend activity over the past year. The rates for weekend occupancy in Southern Nevada raised .4 percent since July 2008, but the occupancy during the week has taken a 4.9 percent drop from a year ago. Fewer tourists spending less money and gambling less has led to a big hit in the state’s tax revenue from gaming.
On a brighter note, the occupancy rates here in Las Vegas are well above the national average. Smith Travel Research noted that the national occupancy rating is 57 percent nationwide in July. That is an astounding 27 percentage points behind Southern Nevada
